Estadio Único opened in La Plata on 7 June 2003, built to a design chosen through a national competition in April 1993, with the first stone laid in 1998. The provincial government owns the ground, not either of the city's clubs — it took possession of the site in 1947, long before any stadium stood there, and that ownership is why Estudiantes and Gimnasia both play here as tenants rather than one club calling it home.

The 2011 renovation gave the stadium a roof over every stand, finished on 17 February that year, and with it a full hybrid pitch — a natural surface reinforced with synthetic fibre, the first of its kind laid in South America. The ground reopened in time to host the 2011 Copa América, taking group games including Argentina against Bolivia and Brazil against Venezuela, before a quarter-final, a semi-final and the third-place match.

On 18 December 2020 the ground was renamed for Diego Armando Maradona, who had died three weeks earlier; older programmes and signage still carry the plainer Estadio Único.

Beyond football, the roof and open bowl have suited touring acts: U2 played three nights here in 2011, Guns N' Roses followed that October, and Roger Waters filled it twice in November 2018.
