Romeo Iamandi Sports Hall

Buzău, Romania

The Romeo Iamandi Sports Hall in Buzău is a venue, but the floor it stands on tells a different story. Built in 1982, the structure underwent a major overhaul between 2010 and 2011, which included replacing the seats and the scoreboard. However, the real shift came in August 2018 when they installed a modern surface of Canadian oak slats covered with four layers of lacquer. Underneath, layers of natural rubber and multilayer plywood were laid down, creating a playing field.

Capacity sits at 1,868 , though some sources cite 1,800. The hall is managed by the Buzău County Sports Tourism Department, but it lives on the sites of its main tenants, SCM Gloria Buzău and HC Buzău 2012. It is a multifunctional space, hosting everything from futsal and table tennis to boxing and volleyball. But it is the handball that is the main attraction.

The venue has hosted crucial matches for Romanian clubs in European competitions, including HCM Constanța in the EHF Champions League against BM Ciudad Real in 2011. Portugal women’s handball match during the 2018 European Championship qualification. It has also seen major kickboxing galas, such as Dynamite Fighting Show events featuring Cătălin Moroșanu. The hall is named after a former handball player and international referee from Buzău, and while there is no confirmed evidence it ever operated under a different official name, it is generally referred to as "Sala Sporturilor" before the dedication.
