Romssa Arena

Tromsø sits at nearly 70°N, and the ground that opened as Alfheim Stadion in 1987 built part of its reputation on that fact: the Cup Winners' Cup tie against St Mirren, played here on 30 September 1987 and finishing 0-0, remains the northernmost fixture in the history of European club competition.

Norway's football press knows the venue as Fort Alfheim, a nickname earned by a home record that has claimed Chelsea, Galatasaray, Beşiktaş and Crvena Zvezda among its visiting casualties. The record crowd came on 15 August 1990, when 10,225 packed in for a Norwegian Cup tie against Rosenborg — a mark the reduced modern capacity could not match again.

The pitch has its own story, shaped by the climate. Natural grass struggled through the Arctic winters and was replaced with FieldTurf in 2006, the work part-funded by an anonymous donor's gift of NOK 7.5 million; complaints about that surface brought a second artificial pitch in June 2010, and a third relaying in 2022. The west stand was enclosed and fitted with seating in 2005.

The Alfheim name lasted until 29 March 2023, when a five-year sponsorship agreement with Troms Kraft saw the ground renamed Romssa Arena, taking the genitive North Sámi form of the city's own name. Away from football, the stadium hosted the Døgnvillfestivalen in August 2007, with Chris Cornell and a-ha among the acts on the bill.
