Shielfield Park

Cross the border a few miles north and Berwick Rangers would have no choice but to play in the English pyramid. Instead the club sits in the Scottish system, in the Lowland League, and Shielfield Park has spent decades as the answer to a pub-quiz question: an English ground hosting Scottish league football.

The current stadium dates to 1954, and it was not built by contractors but by the club's own volunteers and supporters. One stand came from Bradford City, bought for £400 and carted north to Tweedmouth to be rebuilt on site — the kind of frugal, hands-on solution that shaped the whole ground.

Shielfield's biggest night needs no embellishment. On 28 January 1967, Berwick Rangers beat Rangers 1-0 in the first round of the Scottish Cup, a result still ranked among the competition's great shocks. The crowd that squeezed in is put at somewhere between 13,283 and 13,365 depending on whose count is trusted, a figure the current 4,099 capacity makes hard to picture.

That drop owes something to 1990, when safety concerns led to the roofs being stripped from both stands, cutting capacity further. What remains unusual to this day is the speedway track ringing the pitch: Berwick Bandits have raced there on and off since 1968, returning for good in 1996, so the same Tweedmouth turf serves two very different sports on the same weekend calendar.
