In 1918 the pitch here was dug up and planted with potatoes, and Young Boys , tenants since the field opened in April 1902, had to look elsewhere for somewhere to play while the crop was in. The tie survived the war but not the decade: in 1925 the club left for good, and the ground passed to FC Breitenrain .

It was Spitteler , or Spittelerplatz.

Switzerland used the ground twice for internationals. On 25 May 1911 an England amateur side won 4–0 in front of roughly 7,000; on 19 November 1922 the Swiss beat the Netherlands 5–0 with 12,000 packed in.

The last substantial change came in July 2014, when the natural grass was lifted and replaced with artificial turf laid over cork infill, and the lighting was renewed at the same time. The complex takes bookings beyond football as well — Oli Kehrli played a concert on the site in March 2022.
