Uni Bern Women

Handball at the university in Bern goes back to a students' club formed in 1969. That changed in 1998, when Martin Strupler took the team up into the Nationalliga A, the top flight of Swiss handball. Strupler had already done the same trick once before, lifting TV Länggasse Bern into the NLA in 1994, and he stayed involved with Uni Bern from 1986 to 2017, long enough to shape the club well past that single promotion.

The men's section fell away for a stretch in the 2000s while the club concentrated on its women's and junior teams. The women's first team, now known in league tables as Uni Bern United, plays its handball at the Zentrum Sport und Sportwissenschaft in Bern-Neufeld, with a second team, Uni Bern Bees, behind it. In 2018 the first team reached the final of the Schweizer Hochschulmeisterschaft and lost it to Universität Basel by two goals, 9:7.

After some seasons away from the upper tiers, Uni Bern United worked their way back up for 2025/2026, earning promotion to the 1. Liga.

The ZSSw holds 600 spectators.
