Koniz Women

The tribune at the Sporthalle Oberstufenzentrum Köniz, on Schwarzenburgstrasse, is not built for crowds — reports from recent seasons put attendance at around 70. It is where SG Köniz CATS have made their home for the club's women's handball side, tucked inside a school sports complex rather than a purpose-built arena.

The CATS carry the name of Club 72 Köniz, the parent club that has anchored handball in the town for more than fifty years, tracing back to 1972.

Köniz CATS sit in the Swiss 1. Liga, the third tier of the national pyramid, and their clearest measure against the country's stronger sides comes each year in the Mobiliar Handball Cup. In both the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns, the team reached the last 16 before their runs ended — beaten by HSG Aargau Ost the first year, then by SG Zürisee the next. No league title or cup run beyond that stage sits in the club's history.

There has been no marquee name to build a chapter around. What holds instead is the pattern of a small hall and a modest crowd.
