The ground sits where the Peugeot forges once ran, and the name change in 1945 remembered a director taken by the war. The architects Ligne 7 and Vigneron stripped the track out and raised the roof with spruce. The stadium is not far from the factory floor.

The roof structure is spruce, not steel. The heated pitch was the first of its kind in France, and while the heating cables are invisible now. The stadium, which opened in 1931 as Stade de la Forge before becoming Stade Auguste-Bonal, has never tried to hide its industrial roots.

France played the Faroe Islands here in 2006 and the women's side beat Jamaica in 2024, but the rugby match against the Pacific Islanders and the Johnny Hallyday concerts are just dates on a calendar. The stadium does not need to prove anything; it simply stands between the town and the forge.
