Stade de Gatwaro

The pitch at Гатваро was paid for by the people who use it. Around 700 million Burundian francs — roughly 484,000 US dollars — came from residents of Каянза province and from officials serving there. That funding model explains much of what the ground is and is not.

It opened on 24 July 2012, when president Пьер Нкурунзиза cut the ribbon during the celebrations marking fifty years of Burundian independence. The date was not incidental: the ground was finished to a national anniversary.

Of the 5,000 places, only 1,000 are seats. The remaining four-fifths of the crowd stands. The synthetic surface follows from the same logic.

Гатваро itself is the administrative seat of Каянза province, so the ground sits at the centre of provincial business rather than on the edge of a city. Каянза Юнайтед play their home matches here.
