Kayanza United

The stadium came first. In 2012 the president of Burundi cut the ribbon at Stade de Gatwaro in Kayanza, a ground with 5,000 seats, and two years later the town had a club to put in it. Kayanza United was founded on 31 March 2014.

The climb took four seasons. In 2018 the side won Ligue B, which carried it into the top flight, and by 2021 it had finished second in Ligue A — the closest a club from Kayanza has come to the national title. It has never won the league.

There has also been a run to the final of the Burundi Cup, though the club has yet to lift it.

The colours are yellow and black. No nickname has attached itself to the team in the dozen years since it was formed — supporters and the local press use the name as it stands.
