Stade de Rocourt
The ground at Rue de la Tonne carries a name older than anything standing on it. The Stade Vélodrome de Rocourt — also called the Stade Jules Georges — opened in 1921 with a cycling track ringing the pitch, and that track did real work: the UCI Track Cycling World Championships came to Rocourt in 1950, 1957, 1963 and again in 1975. Between those visits the ground held a crowd of 47,000 for a match against Spartak Moscow in 1954.
What replaced it, twenty years later, is a different proposition entirely. The present Stade de Rocourt was designed by Thierry Biron and built for an estimated €8 million, split between the City of Liège and the Walloon Region. RFC Liège spent part of 2015 on temporary pitches before moving into the permanent facilities for the 2015–16 season.
It is also the other ground in the city. Standard Liège play at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne in Sclessin, across town; Rocourt is where the older club came home, on the same address, under an artificial surface and a sponsor's name, the Stade de la Verrerie .
