Stade Pierre Mauroy

Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France

Formerly: Grand Stade Lille Métropole

The Stade Pierre Mauroy does not sit quietly in the city. The structure is distinct because the floor itself moves. A large section of the pitch lifts and slides away to reveal a flat arena underneath, which means the ground is as likely to host a basketball game as a football match.

The stadium opened in 2012, but its identity changed almost immediately. It began as the Grand Stade Lille Métropole before being renamed to honour Pierre Mauroy, the former prime minister who championed the project. The financial backbone of the venue was a shared burden between the local council and the football club, but the design choice that drew scrutiny was the seismic reinforcement. A French law passed after the 2011 earthquake in Japan forced the builders to spend nearly a hundred million euros reinforcing the structure, making the stadium robust enough to shake without falling apart.

Inside, the atmosphere is contained rather than open to the sky. The retractable roof closes the space completely. The surface is a hybrid of grass and synthetic fibres, chosen for durability under constant use.

The building is not just for sport. It has held matches for the World Men’s Handball Championship and basketball tournaments for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The versatility of the space is its primary feature, allowing the same geometry to serve entirely different purposes depending on the calendar.
