The ground went up in Мантуя from a 1930 drawing by the engineer Альдо Бадалотти, with building work starting in 1947, and at its opening it carried the name Stadio Benito Mussolini. In 1945 it took the name of Джон Р. Нейтон, an American soldier killed in the city. Then, on 4 May 1949, the aircraft carrying the Grande Torino squad came down at Superga, and the ground took the name of one of the players lost there, Данило Мартелли.

The other thing that shaped the place was the cycling track that ran round the pitch. Seating on the track was stripped out in 1993 under tighter safety rules, taking the ground from around 21,000 down to 12,000. In the summer of 2005, with the club back in Серия B, part of the velodrome's western curve was dismantled over objections from the Italian cycling federation, and a demountable metal Curva Te went up in its place.

The fullest house came earlier, on 1 June 1967: 25,000 for Мантова against Интер, a match remembered for Джулиано Сарта's error in the visitors' goal, which handed the title to Ювентус. On 20 July 1977 a tornado tore through the ground.
