Stadion Schützenmatte
The ground on Wielandplatz sits on land that was shooting range from 1498, and the name never let that go: the plot was released for sport in 1917, and the stadium that opened on it kept the old title, Schützenmatte.
The formal opening came on 10 September 1922, with a match between the home club, BSC Old Boys Basel, and Штутгартер Кикерс from Germany. Old Boys have been the tenants ever since, and the ground is theirs in the ordinary sense — a club pitch in Bachletten, natural grass, a running track around it that still gets used for athletics rather than sitting there as decoration.
Its odd chapter came later. Between 1998 and 2001, while Санкт-Якоб-Парк was being built across the city, ФК Базель moved in.
There is a small practical quirk for anyone arriving: the address depends on which entrance you use. Wielandplatz 12 is the official one; General-Guisan-Strasse 29 turns up just as often. Both put you at the same pitch.
