Old Boys

In the 1898–99 season Basel's two clubs met, and FC Basel scored with a hand. Old Boys protested, the referee overturned the goal, and they went through. They finished the season as runners-up.

They came second twice more. In 1903–04 they took the central group play-off 3–2 against Young Boys, then lost the final to St. Gallen; the third silver medal came in 1912–13. The Swiss Cup never followed, and by 1932 the club had dropped out of the professional leagues altogether. It took until 1987 to get back into Nationalliga B, and relegation to the amateur divisions in 1995–96 ended it. One of the players on that last second-division side was Martin Jeitziner, who by then had turned out for both Young Boys and Old Boys.

The Stadion Schützenmatte holds 8 000. In 2025 the club won 2. Liga Interregional Group 2, beating Bosna Neuchâtel 4–1 in the final match, and went up to 1. Liga Classic.

Leopold Kielholz began in 1927–28 and went on to become the first Swiss player to score at a World Cup. Eren Derdiyok scored 10 goals in 18 matches for the first team in 2005–06 before leaving; he later won 60 caps for Switzerland.

The tennis section, founded in 1927 and split off as Tennis Club Old Boys in 1935, became the home club of Roger Federer.

All of it started on 20 October 1894, when a group of Realschüler-Turnverein leavers found themselves too old for the school sports club and set up their own. The nickname, Alte Jungs, was never a joke at their expense.
