Emmanuel Mammana was taken to intensive care after a collision with his own goalkeeper during Vélez Sarsfield's 1-1 draw at Newell's Old Boys, suffering six broken ribs and a punctured lung.
The former Zenit and Sochi defender clashed with Tomás Marchiori in the 59th minute. Mammana injured the right side of his chest, leaving him with multiple rib fractures and a pneumothorax. He underwent emergency surgery at the Sanatorio de la Mujer, where surgeons fitted a chest drain.
Vélez said Mammana remains in intensive care as a precaution, and that a satisfactory clinical recovery is expected.
