The ground opened in 1964 when the Campbelltown City Council developed the site following the formation of Campbelltown City Soccer Club the previous year.
The most memorable moment here was in August 2023 when Campbelltown City defeated Macarthur FC, the A-League Men champions, 2-1 in the Australia Cup Round of 32.
The ground has hosted other teams too, including Modbury Jets SC for home matches, and once even a floristry school course in 2018. It remains the home of Campbelltown City SC, which competes in the National Premier Leagues South Australia, though the club has also been known simply as the Newton Sports Ground by those who remember it by its former name.
