Tent Maidan

The address does a stadium's job without being one. On the Maidan, the great green that opens out behind Red Road, Kolkata's clubs keep their tents — clubhouses, offices, changing rooms — and the pitches sit alongside them. Mohammedan Sporting Club, Mohun Bagan Athletic Club and East Bengal Club all have their headquarters here, within walking distance of one another, which is why one postal address ends up standing for ground that belongs to three sets of supporters.

Walk through the Mohammedan tent and you reach the Mohammedan Sporting Ground, the club's own pitch. It has been rebuilt in stages rather than all at once: work was announced in 2011, announced again in 2016, and by 2023 the club was carrying out an upgrade meant to take the ground to 25,000 seats and to add floodlights and an electronic scoreboard.

The neighbours have taken different routes. Mohun Bagan's tent stands on Gostha Paul Sarani, and the pitch beside it was laid out as the Calcutta FC Ground long before the club moved in during 1963; since 2022 it has been artificial turf. East Bengal's tent adjoins the ground that opened in 1915 under another name, the National AC Ground. Between them these pitches carry the Calcutta Football League.
