The Shay

FC Halifax Town on the football side and Halifax Panthers in rugby league share the ground at Shay Syke. That dual tenancy is part of why the playing surface here is a hybrid — natural grass stitched with artificial fibre, laid in the summer before the 2023/24 season at a cost of £800,000.

The Skircoat Stand has stood since the ground opened and is the oldest structure on the site. In 1985, following the Popplewell Report into the fire at Valley Parade, standing areas were closed and the capacity fell sharply. Three years later the club bought a stand from Scunthorpe United. Work on the East Stand — the Main Stand, single-tiered and covered, holding 3,500 — ran from 2001 to 2010.

Of the current capacity of 10,401, roughly half is safe standing: 5,293 places across the North and South stands, against 5,108 seats.

The record crowd belongs to a snowy afternoon on 14 February 1953, when 36,885 packed in for a fifth-round FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs won 3-0.

From 2015 the ground carried a sponsor's name, The MBI Shay Stadium, under a deal with MBI Consulting Limited. The company was wound up in 2019; the debt was written off in 2023, and the original name came back.
