Halifax Town and Sutton United played out a 1-1 draw in the National League Regular Season on Saturday at the Shay. The match finished level after both teams found the net in the final minutes of stoppage time.
And here's the thing about this one - it wasn't decided until the 90th minute. M. Bardell gave Halifax the lead at 90+4, then Sutton responded almost immediately with an equaliser at 90+5. By then, the game had settled into a rhythm where neither side wanted to risk too much.
To be fair, the statistics told a story of balance. Both teams finished with 50 per cent possession and four shots on target each. Halifax managed 145 attacks to Sutton's 112, but the chances created were remarkably even. Five yellow cards came in total, with Halifax taking four and Sutton one.
The substitutions told another part of the story. Halifax brought on B. Brookes and D. Crowe together at 46, then added D. Hill at 55 and B. Njoku at 60. Sutton's changes came later - W. Hugill at 73 and J. Knight at 76. The coach worked the channels, looking for an edge that simply wasn't there.
Halifax sit 12th in the table with nine points from nine games, while Sutton occupy sixth place on 16. The hosts had won three in a row before this match, but the run ended here. Sutton's recent form has been mixed, with losses to Scunthorpe and Barrow before this point.
We had backed Halifax to win at 50 per cent confidence, but the match refused to go that way. What we saw instead was a game decided by moments rather than dominance, where two goals in two minutes settled a contest neither side could quite break open.
