Bill Shankly took his first job in management at Brunton Park in 1949, three years before he left for Huddersfield and two decades before Liverpool made him a name known well beyond Cumbria. Carlisle United gave him that start, a fact the club still trades on more than the man himself ever got the chance to build with them.

The team traces back to Shaddongate United, formed in 1896 and playing out at Willow Holme before a change of name in 1904 turned it into Carlisle United. The move to Brunton Park followed in 1909, and the club has not left since, meaning this is one of the longer single-ground tenures in English football even if the current capacity, reduced to under 10,000, tells a smaller story than the 17,949 the ground was built to hold.

Carlisle's one season among England's elite came in 1974-75, in the old First Division, a campaign that stands alone in the club's history and has not been repeated. More often the story has been about promotions won and lost: two in successive years either side of 1965, relegation out of the Football League altogether in 2004, an immediate return the following year through the play-offs, and a second fall back into non-League football in 2023 after 19 years away from it. Two Football League Trophy wins, in 1997 and 2011, sit alongside those as the club's clearest modern silverware.

Barrow is the fixture that matters most now, the closest club geographically and the one Carlisle keeps running into at this level, with the away end at Brunton Park never short of noise when they meet. Older rivalries with Workington and Hartlepool United carry less weight in a division where survival and another promotion push are the more pressing concerns.
