Water is the recurring theme at Brunton Park. The ground sits on low land off Warwick Road, and in January 2005 it flooded badly enough to force matches elsewhere and a £1.5m repair. In December 2015, storm Desmond did it again, this time at a cost of around £1m.

Fire came first. The wooden stand of 1912 burned down and was replaced across 1953–54 for £20,000, part of it covered by selling Geoff Twentyman to Liverpool for £12,500.

The ground opened on 2 September 1909 with Carlisle United against Newcastle United, and Carlisle United have played here ever since, though the stands have been: the West Stand went from Pirelli Family Stand to Armstrong Watson Stand, the East Stand from Cumberland Community Stand to Pioneer Foods Stand and now the Andrew Jenkins Stand.

The East Stand itself dates from August 1996 and cost £3m. After Castle Sports Group bought the club, a £5m programme across 2023–25 reworked the hospitality boxes and added a screen.

The record crowd of 27,500 came on 5 January 1957, an FA Cup tie against Birmingham City. Australia beat a Cumbria rugby league side 41–2 here in 1982, and in 2007 the ground was reconfigured to 20,000 seats for Elton John.
