Carlisle edge Scunthorpe in five-goal thriller
Carlisle took a 4:2 victory over Scunthorpe at Brunton Park on Monday evening in the National League's fifth round of fixtures. The hosts moved into fifteenth place on five points, while Scunthorpe remained in sixteenth with four.
M. Azeez opened the scoring early, finding the net in the seventh minute. Scunthorpe responded through J. Richards at the twenty-eighth, but Carlisle had already reached for their pocket after the break and took control. R. Linney restored the lead before half-time, and by then the visitors were already paying for a sloppy opening.
J. Williams added a third for Carlisle in the thirty-eighth minute, shortly after Richards picked up his first yellow card. The substitution window saw Richards replaced at forty-six, and Carlisle continued to hold the tie in their own hands. A second yellow for Linney at fifty-two briefly threatened to unravel things.
The breakthrough for Scunthorpe came from J. Luamba in the sixty-eighth minute, but Carlisle had already worked a short corner mentality into their game. R. Barrows completed the scoring in the eighty-fourth, and the clean-sheet run came to an end for the visitors.
Carlisle enjoyed 51 per cent possession and registered eleven shots on target, though Scunthorpe managed ninety-three attacks to their eighty-one. The visitors' goalkeeper made seven saves compared to four, but the shots accuracy was identical at fifty per cent for both sides.
Carlisle's recent form showed two draws and a win before this result, while Scunthorpe had won their last meeting against Solihull Moors. The gap between them remains narrow, and the relationship has soured somewhat between these two clubs this season.
