Match report

Southend United ran riot at Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday, running out 6-1 winners in the National League's ninth round of fixtures. The visitors, who sit second in the table with 20 points, made no mistake against a Gateshead side languishing in 24th place with just four points from nine games. By then, the gap between these two clubs looked wider than the scoreboard suggested.

Southend got off to a flying start, with H. Cardwell opening the scoring in the sixth minute and K. McAdam doubling the lead two minutes later. S. Austin added a third before the quarter-hour mark, and the visitors never looked back. Cardwell restored the two-goal margin just before the break, and Austin completed his hat-trick with a pair in the second half, including one on 45+2 minutes. Gateshead pulled one back in the 90th minute, but the damage was done.

The home side made three changes at half-time in a vain attempt to stem the tide, bringing on V. Daley-Campbell, F. Issaka and J. Hiwula. The visitors followed suit, swapping H. Cardwell and K. McAdam for fresh legs. More substitutions followed as the game wore on, but neither manager could change the complexion of the contest. Gateshead's O. Coker and Southend's R. Coyle were booked, while the visiting manager went yellow as well.

The statistics tell a story of dominance. Southend registered 11 shots on target compared to three, and their attackers were far more clinical on the day. Both sides had equal possession at 50 per cent, but the visitors turned their share into genuine danger. Gateshead managed only three shots on target from 88 attacks, while Southend carved them open with 120 attacks and 11 shots on target. They ran the show for large stretches, and the final score reflected that control.

We had backed Southend to win, and the prediction held up. Confidence sat at 60 per cent, and while a six-goal margin wasn't anticipated, the result confirmed what the form book already showed. Gateshead's recent run has been poor, with five consecutive games without a victory, while Southend have won six of their nine matches. The visitors clawed their way to second place with six wins and two draws, and this result extended their momentum considerably.

The result leaves Southend two points behind the league leaders, a gap that could narrow quickly. Gateshead's position at the bottom of the table grows more precarious by the week. They have lost seven of nine games and now face a difficult run of fixtures. The scoreline was harsh, but the performance justified the verdict. Southend went for the jugular from the start and never let up.
