Tynecastle Park

The one thing this ground has that its Scottish rivals mostly don't is a name that came and went and came back. Hearts called it Tynecastle Park from the start, but when the Taylor Report forced a rebuild in the 1990s and the west and north stands came down for the Wheatfield, Roseburn and Gorgie stands, the club dropped the old name for the flatter Tynecastle Stadium. It carried no sponsor attached to it, just a placeholder for a ground mid-reconstruction. Hearts found their way back to the original name in 2017, once the new Main Stand was finished.

That Main Stand replaced a 1914 design by Archibald Leitch, the architect behind several of Britain's old football grounds, and its 2016–2017 successor came with offices, boxes and seating for just over seven thousand behind the glass. Forty years earlier, in 1954, Tynecastle had already made one quiet piece of history: it became the first ground in Scotland to be fully concreted over.

The record for the place dates back further still — 53,396 packed in for a Scottish Cup tie against Rangers on 13 February 1932, before any of the Taylor Report stands existed. The pitch underneath the players now is newer than almost everything else here, a hybrid surface laid in 2018–2019 to hold up under a Scottish football and rugby calendar. Edinburgh's International Festival used the ground once too, in August 2019, for a concert rather than a match.
