Universal Sports Hall Druzhba
Moscow, Russia
It has a distinct curved shape that gives it a nickname among locals: the Shell. This is not a football ground. It is a sports hall inside the Luzhniki complex, built to host the volleyball tournament for the 1980 Olympic Games. The structure opened in 1979 and has remained under that name ever since.
Inside, the seating rises steeply. The main tenant is the Dynamo Moscow women's volleyball team, who play here in the Russian Super League. The hall has seen other sports over the years—basketball, handball, and futsal—but the volleyball courts remain the focus. A children's tennis school has operated here since 1993, filling the space with activity long after the Olympic torch was extinguished.
The most notable recent event was the 2004-05 UEFA Futsal Cup Final, played on the court in April 2005. The venue underwent a major reconstruction that lasted from 2017 to 2024, updating the facilities while keeping the original shell shape. Access is straightforward. Visitors can walk from the Vorobyovy Gory metro station, which is about 500 meters away. The postal code for the area is 119048.
