The team began life in 1954 as the volleyball side of the Moscow Aviation Institute, and it took eighteen years before it found the identity it kept for most of its existence: in 1972 the roster moved across to the Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School, and the letters MVTU, later MGTU, followed it through several further rebrandings — MGTU-Luzhniki, then Dynamo-MGTU — before the club settled back on MGTU in 2004.

Its best run came at the turn of the millennium. MGTU took the Russian Superleague title in the 2000/01 season, added a runners-up finish the year after and a bronze the season after that — a three-year stretch built around players such as Taras Khatey, Andrey Ashchev and Pavel Moroz. The Soviet years had already given the club two USSR Cups, in 1972 and 1981, alongside a handful of championship medals going back to a silver in the club's founding year.

What followed the 2003 bronze was a long stretch without a place among the country's top sides. MGTU dropped into the Higher League "A" and stayed there for nineteen years before winning promotion back to the Superliga for the 2025/26 season. In between, the club found a different stage: it reached the quarter-finals of the CEV Champions League twice, in 2020/21 and again in 2023/24, with players including Igor Filippov and Anton Anoshko carrying the side through that period.

MGTU now returns to the Superliga with the task of establishing itself again among clubs it once beat to a national title.
