The club that plays under the name Gorky today exists because its predecessor, Gubernia, folded under financial debts. What took its place in the summer of 2016 was called ASK, an abbreviation for Association of Sports Clubs, and it carried that name for nine seasons before a public vote in the summer of 2025 restored the old nickname of the city.

Promotion came quickly: the club won the Higher League B in its first season, 2016/17, and the Higher League A two years later, reaching the Superliga in time for the following campaign. It has stayed there since, without ever threatening the title — eighth place, taken twice, in 2020/21 and 2022/23, remains the club's ceiling. In the Russian Cup the closest it has come is the semi-final, reached four seasons running between 2019 and 2022.

Pavel Zheleznyakov, the diagonal hitter, has been named the club's best player in three separate seasons — 2022/23, 2024/25 and 2025/26. Alexander Pyatyrkin, best player in 2018/19, has captained the side since 2023. The club has leaned on its own academy: six graduates featured in the 2017/18 roster, and a reserve side, Gorky-2, keeps producing them.

Home matches are watched from 1,500 seats at FOK Zarechye. The rivalry that matters most travels down the Volga: fixtures against VC Nova, from Novokuybyshevsk, are played as the Volga Derby, a fixture defined by the river both cities sit on rather than by proximity.
