Surgut's club started life in 1996 as Gazovik-ZSK, tied to the Surgut Plant of Condensate Stabilization, before a name change in 2000 to ZSK-Gazprom and, in 2007, to Gazprom-Ugra. It has never left Surgut.

The club's high point in Europe came in the 2015–16 season, when it reached the CEV Cup final and lost to Berlin Recycling Volleys; that run coincided with back-to-back fourth-place finishes in the Superliga, in 2014–15 and 2015–16, still its best domestic results. Two years later it added a CEV Challenge Cup semi-final. Earlier in its history, the club won the Cup of Siberia and the Far East four times, in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2008.

Aleksey Ashapatov, a leader at the club, lost a leg in an attack in 2002. He went on to become a Paralympic champion. Rafael Habibullin has run the club for most of its existence, as both CEO and head coach.
