Novy Urengoy sits above the Arctic Circle in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, and volleyball there grew out of the same industry that built the city: the team began life in 1984 under the Urengoygazprom production association before turning professional in 1996.

What Fakel won, though, put a town of gas workers on the European volleyball map. In the 2006/07 season the club took the CEV Cup, beating the Italian side Piacenza in the final, and followed it with a Russian Cup runners-up finish the same year, losing out to Dynamo Moscow. A decade later they added the CEV Challenge Cup, defeating Chaumont of France in 2016/17 after being turned away by Verona in the previous season's final. By 2018 Fakel were taking bronze at the FIVB Club World Championship, seeing off the Polish club Resovia for third place.
