Zvezdny Sports Palace
Novy Urengoy, Russia
The Zvezdny Sports Palace sits in the Olympic microdistrict of Novy Urengoy. It opened in 2016 to replace the old Gazodobyvchik Sports Center, bringing Fakel Yamal from wherever they had been playing into a venue built for them. The complex covers 24,000 square metres, but the main hall holds 2,040 seats on a wooden parquet floor rather than the concrete slab often found in similar halls.
Inside, the wooden floor is set up for volleyball, which is the sport that keeps the place busy. The capacity is often cited as 3,000, though the main hall holds just over 2,000; the extra space belongs to the other zones in the complex. The construction company VIS Group built the place between 2011 and 2016, and it was officially opened on September 8, 2016, with Nikolai Patrushev and Dmitry Kobylinkin in attendance. The venue has not been renamed since it opened, and there is no confusion with the other Zvezdny Sports Palace in Lipetsk, which is a different facility built in 1975 and holds 2,000 people. The surface is natural wood, and the hall is used for indoor sports.
