Vladimir Kalmykov, deputy general director of the "Orenburgneft" production association, set the club up in 1983 out of the association's technological transport department, giving its workers a team to play under the Neftyanik name. It kept that name, with a brief interruption, for most of four decades, carrying sponsorship changes through TNK-Orenburg and TNK-BP before reverting to Neftyanik in 2012; in November 2024 the club took its current name, Orenburzhye.

Domestically the club has stayed a level below the game's top table. It took the Second League in 1993/94 and the Higher League "A" in 1999/00. Its closest brush with a major trophy came in the Russian Cup, where a semi-final run in the 2012/13 season.

Matches against Dynamo-Ural of Ufa carry the weight of a regional fixture, played out as the Ural derby. Orenburzhye plays its games in front of just over a thousand seats at SK Olimpiyskiy.
