Maxim Mikhailov led the scoring charts for Yaroslavich in the 2007/08 season. Semyon Poltavskiy took the Andrei Kuznetsov Award as the league's best player in 2010/11 while wearing the same shirt, and Aleksandr Sokolov, an Olympic champion, spent two spells here, from 2000 to 2009 and again in 2013–2014.

Those years peaked either side of the millennium: fourth place in the Superliga in 1999/00 and again in 2000/01, with a run to the CEV Cup quarter-finals in the same stretch. A Superliga title never followed, but the Higher League A has been won three times, in 1996/97, 2006/07 and 2016/17.

In 2012 the club was pulled from the brink of dissolution by the regional government, and relegation in 2014 stripped it of most of its squad. Sergey Grankin, who began his career at Yaroslavich in 2001.

On court, the fiercest of it played out against Zenit-Kazan; Lokomotiv Novosibirsk and Belogorye Belgorod carry that rivalry now. Known to their own crowd as the Yaroslavl Bears, the club traces back to 1988, when it was formed under the name Neftyanik on the strength of the Novoyaroslavl Oil Refinery.
