Kemerovo sits at the heart of the Kuznetsk Coal Basin, and when a professional volleyball team appeared there in 2008, it took the region's name rather than inventing an animal or a slogan: Kuzbass. The Siberian Business Union and the regional governor, Aman Tuleyev, built the club from nothing, and it climbed from the Higher League A into the Superliga by the 2010/2011 season, a fast rise for a side with no history to lean on.

The years that followed were less about survival than about closing the gap on Russian volleyball's established order. Zenit Kazan had won five straight championships by 2019, and it was Kuzbass who ended that run, beating Kazan 3:1 in the final under coach Tuomas Sammelvuo. The Super Cup followed that same year. Two bronze medals, in 2018 and in a 2020 season cut short by the pandemic, bracket that title without matching it.

Zenit Kazan remains the club's defining rival, the team whose dominance Kuzbass had to break rather than simply play against. There is a nearer, more local edge to the fixtures with Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, the Siberian derby, and matches against Belogorye Belgorod and Dynamo Moscow carry their own weight. At home, the SRK Arena on Gagarina Street holds fewer than 4,000 for volleyball, and the club's own academy has started to feed the first team rather than relying only on imports, with Alexander Moiseev and Ivan Ropavka signing long-term contracts as homegrown players back in 2016.

Europe has been less kind. Kuzbass reached the CEV Cup semi-finals in 2017/2018, losing there to Galatasaray, and a Champions League quarter-final run in 2019/2020 ended not on court but with the tournament's suspension, leaving the club still short of a continental final it has yet to reach.
