What the stadium is known for is the 1985 rebuild. The old Stadio Carlo Pranzo was demolished to make room for this, and the construction firm of Costantino Rozzi did the work that lifted the club into Serie A.

The capacity is often quoted at 40,670, though the official number is lower, having been adjusted for safety reasons. The real figures matter less than the fact that this is the stadium for Lecce. It hosted Pope John Paul II in 1994, which places it in a category of its own. More recently it held concerts and international friendlies, but those are passing visitors.

The playing surface is being prepared for the 2026 Mediterranean Games, which means there will be more renovation.
