Viljandi linnastaadion
Viljandi, Estonia
The ground at Vesiflirdi 3 was pushed through by August Maramaa, then mayor of Viljandi, who had work started in 1928 and the stadium opened in June of the following year. It was not finished. The economic crisis arrived before the builders did, and the job stopped for several years — what opened in 1929 was a stadium in part only.
What came after was slow rather than dramatic. The ground was reworked in 1960, again in 1989, then in 2009, and most recently across 2021 and 2022, when the grass was lifted and replaced. Natural turf has stayed the surface throughout.
Through all of it the name did not move. No sponsor has ever been attached to it, and it has been Viljandi linnastaadion since the day it opened — unusual enough among grounds that have been rebuilt four times over. The city owns it and MA Viljandi Spordikeskus runs it; there is no separate site for the stadium itself, and what is published about it comes through the sports centre.
