Welwalo Stadium

Adigrat sits close to the Eritrean border, in Tigray, and the ground that carries the town's name has spent much of the last decade caught between ambition and the state of the pitch itself. Through the 2017/18 season, Welwalo Stadium had no grass to speak of — a bare surface that made every home fixture for Welwalo Adigrat University FC a test of footing as much as football. That changed in August 2018, when reconstruction work was announced: a new playing surface and new seating, bringing the ground closer to the standard its 10,000 capacity implies.

The stadium carries the university's name for a reason — Adigrat University oversees it, and the club itself traces its lineage back to 1948, though the present-day football side re-formed in 2011. That split identity, old roots and a young administrative structure, runs through the club's away arrangements too: when Welwalo Adigrat University FC needs a bigger stage, the fixture moves to the Addis Ababa Stadium on Ras Desta Damtew Street, some distance south in the capital, rather than staying under the Adigrat floodlights.

No opening date survives in the record, and no single match stands out as the one that defined the ground's history. What is clear is the shape of its recent past: a surface stripped down to nothing, then rebuilt, in a town where the football club and the university that runs its stadium are, in practice, the same institution.
