Welwalo Adigrat Uni

A 2-0 win over Sidama Bunna in the 2025/26 Ethiopian Cup final gave Welwalo Adigrat University a route into the CAF Confederation Cup — the club's first appearance in continental football. The venue for the away leg was confirmed earlier this month.

The club is tied to Adigrat University in Tigray, and the record of when it actually started is unsettled. Wikipedia dates it to 1948, under the name Wolwalo. The Ethiopian Business Review gives a different account: founded in 1956, later dismantled, then rebuilt in 2012. Other registries split the difference again. What the sources agree on is the nickname, Yellow Kings, and the yellow-and-black colours behind it.

Welwalo reached the Ethiopian Premier League for the first time in 2017. The 2024/25 season ended in 18th place and relegation to the Ethiopian Higher League — the division the club was playing in when it won the Cup. Home matches are played at Welwalo Stadium, which holds 10,000.

One match left a longer mark than any league result. In April 2018, a member of the coaching staff attacked the referee during a game against Defense Force S.C., an incident serious enough to force a suspension of the Ethiopian championship. The Confederation Cup run gives the club its biggest stage yet. The Premier League title is still not among what it has won.
