The Ethiopian Cup is the primary domestic knockout football tournament in Ethiopia. Organised by the Ethiopian Football Federation, it sits as the top cup in the Ethiopian football pyramid, distinct from the Ethiopian Premier League. The competition was founded in 1945, with the inaugural winner being the British Military Mission.
Eligibility extends beyond the top-tier Ethiopian Premier League to include clubs from the Ethiopian Higher League and regional leagues. Recent editions have featured approximately 32 teams in the first round. The format is a straight knockout tournament, though the exact total number of participants varies by season. The competition has faced significant interruptions due to political instability, with no tournaments held during several periods including 1961–1969, 1979, 1989, 1991–1992, 2012, and 2020–2023.
The most successful club in the competition's history is Mekelakeya SC, with 14 titles. Saint George SA is the second most successful with 10 titles. Other notable winners include Ethiopian Coffee and EEPCO. The current title holder is Welwalo Adigrat University, who won the 2026 edition by defeating Sidama Coffee 2–0. The 2025 final between Sidama Coffee and Wolaitta Dicha was controversial; Sidama Coffee won 2–1 on the pitch, but the Ethiopian Football Federation later awarded the title to Wolaitta Dicha by walkover due to Sidama fielding ineligible players, a decision subject to appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The winner of the Ethiopian Cup qualifies for the CAF Confederation Cup, Africa's secondary club competition. The competition does not have a permanent title sponsor name, unlike the Premier League which has had sponsors such as Castle Beer and Midrok.
