York Lions Stadium / BMO Field
The pitch at BMO Field is 95 per cent Kentucky bluegrass and 5 per cent polyethylene fibre, stitched into the root zone. That SISGrass hybrid surface went down in 2019.
It opened on 28 April 2007, timed for the FIFA U-20 World Cup that summer, at a cost of 62.9 million Canadian dollars — money that came jointly from Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the federal government, the province of Ontario and the city of Toronto. PCL Construction built it to a design by Brisbin Brooks Beynon Architects.
Then came the temporary stands built for the 2026 World Cup, which lifted the ground from 30,991 to 45,736.
Beyond that: the 2010 MLS Cup final as a neutral venue, Toronto's own finals in 2016 and 2017, the 2014 U-20 Women's World Cup, and Gold Cup matches in 2015 and 2023.
