Match report

Al Ain Demolish Al Nasr 4-0 in Champions League Opener

Al Ain made a statement on their own turf when they thrashed Al Nasr 4-0 at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium. The result came in the opening round of the AFC Champions League League Phase on Monday evening. And here's the thing — this wasn't a tight contest where luck decided the outcome. The hosts camped in the final third from the outset and punished every mistake.

Houssine Rahimi opened the scoring in the twenty-fifth minute, a goal that put the home side ahead and changed the tempo entirely. By then, Al Nasr were already on the back foot, and they made matters worse when Saad Fahad Al Nasser came off on the hour. The substitution came after a yellow card for the midfielder, and Rahimi himself picked up a booking just before the break. To be fair, Al Nasr had possession — 57 per cent — but they couldn't turn it into anything meaningful.

Rahimi doubled his tally in the sixty-third minute, and by then the visitors had stopped trying to build from the back. They simply couldn't cope with the pressure. Al Ain changed shape at the break, pressing higher and forcing errors. The statistics tell the story: Al Nasr attempted thirty-one crosses but only landed seven, while the hosts created four big chances against just one for the visitors.

Soufiane Rahimi made it three in the seventy-second minute, though the goal wasn't confirmed until the seventy-sixth after a VAR check. The delay didn't matter — the result was already clear. Al Nasr tried to respond with fresh legs, bringing on Samu Costa and Abdulelah Al-Amri, but the damage was done. Giorgos Giakoumakis closed the game out in the eighty-fifth minute with a fourth goal, and the visitors finished with two yellow cards in stoppage time.

The numbers don't lie. Al Ain fired seven shots on target against three for Al Nasr, and their expected goals of 2.01 reflected the quality of chances created. The visitors had more possession but 95 attacks yielded just one big chance. Al Ain won 14 of 24 aerial duels and completed 267 passes compared to 354 for the visitors — but possession without penetration is just circulation.

Al Ain sit top of the table with three points from one game, while Al Nasr are sixteenth with none. The hosts now have one foot in the next round if this form continues. Al Nasr will need to find answers quickly — they've already paid for a sloppy opening.
