Thailand U23 edge Kyrgyzstan in Group Stage opener
Thailand U23 secured a 3-2 victory over Kyrgyzstan in the opening Group Stage match of the Asian Games on Tuesday. The hosts, who had lost their previous three encounters, turned things around with a second-half surge. To be fair, Kyrgyzstan started brighter and deserved their early advantage.
Kyrgyzstan took the lead in the 23rd minute through K. Iskandarbekov, then doubled their advantage when A. Balbakov struck at the 47th minute. S. Nematov had been cautioned for Thailand just before that. Kyrgyzstan looked comfortable, but the momentum shifted after the interval.
J. Mamah pulled one back for Thailand in the 56th minute, setting up an anxious final quarter. Both sides made five substitutions at the 62nd minute, bringing on fresh legs. P. Wongsa came on and immediately made his mark.
Wongsa scored in the 69th minute to level matters, then added another in the 73rd to complete the turnaround. By then, Kyrgyzstan had already made their changes, including bringing on W. Noisri and S. Chawanwit. The high line was picked apart twice in quick succession.
Discipline didn't hold up toward the end. P. Wongsa received a yellow card in the 82nd minute, shortly after his second goal. S. Boonlha was also cautioned earlier, while T. Chotmuangpak took a booking in the 87th minute. Kyrgyzstan's A. Raimbekov had been shown yellow before being substituted.
The statistics tell an interesting story. Both sides controlled 50% of possession, but Thailand's shot accuracy was significantly better at 0.35 compared to Kyrgyzstan's 0.24. Kyrgyzstan registered more attacks overall at 104, yet Thailand converted their chances more efficiently with six shots on target.
The result puts Thailand top of the group with one win and three points. Kyrgyzstan dropped to third place with zero points from their opening match. The ground out the win after a nervous finale, but the points matter more than the manner.
We had predicted a home victory with 49% confidence, and here's the thing, it came through. Kyrgyzstan had the better run earlier, but Thailand's composure in front of goal turned the fixture. The academy graduate marked his first start with a goal, and that changed everything.
