Suso came through Cádiz's youth system before leaving Spain as a teenager for Liverpool, where he signed his first professional contract in November 2010 and made his senior debut two years later. A loan at UD Almería gave him regular first-team football, and in January 2015 Milan paid around €1.3 million to take him early, with a year still left on his contract.

Milan became the making of him. Across five seasons in Italy, including a loan spell at Genoa, he won the Supercoppa Italiana in 2016, later picking up a Sportitalia Awards recognition in 2017. That form earned him a senior Spain call-up in November 2017, in a friendly against Russia, adding to youth caps at U17, U18, U19 and U20 level and a European Under-19 title with Spain in 2012.

Sevilla signed him on loan in January 2020 with an obligation to buy, completing the permanent deal that July for a reported €24 million. Over five seasons and more than 120 appearances, he won the UEFA Europa League twice, in 2019–20 and again in 2022–23. When his contract expired in 2025, he returned to Cádiz, the club that had first given him a game, on a free transfer. He made 27 appearances and scored once before retiring in 2026.
