About the player
Darijan Žarkov came through at NK Lokomotiva Zagreb, making his debut in the 2012/2013 season, but for years afterwards the club sent him out on repeated loans — to NK Lučko across two separate spells, to NK Rudeš and to NK Segesta. He returned to Lokomotiva in between those moves and was loaned to Lučko again in 2016/2017.
The turning point came when he left Croatia altogether. In July 2020 he joined AC Omonia Psevda in Cyprus, working under coach Danijel Pranjić, before a free transfer in November 2021 took him to Gzira United in the Maltese Premier League. Malta is where Žarkov's career actually took shape: he became a key figure for Gzira, making around 85 appearances and posting a save percentage of 76.3% in the 2022/2023 season, and his market value peaked at €250,000 during that spell.
His contract with Gzira expired at the end of 2024, and on 4 February 2025 he signed for HNK Gorica on a free transfer, bringing him back to Croatian football. He has not been capped by the Croatian national team at any level.
