About the player
Diego Callai Silva's route to Sporting CP's first-team squad was long before it was direct. He arrived at the club's academy in 2015 after starting out at EC Juventude, signed his first professional contract in July 2020, and spent 2021 to 2024 with Sporting CP B, making 92 appearances across Liga 3 and Liga Revelação. A loan to Feirense in the Segunda Liga in January 2024 gave him 11 further appearances before he returned to Sporting that June.
He was nonetheless part of the squad that won the Primeira Liga in 2023–24 and 2024–25, and the Taça de Portugal in 2024–25.
Born in Brazil, Callai has been in the process of acquiring Portuguese citizenship, with reports from 2023 suggesting it was close to completion; he is also reported to hold Italian citizenship. His father, Diego Costa Silva, was himself a goalkeeper.
