About the player
Sands is a product of the New York City FC Academy, where he came through between 2015 and 2019 before moving on to college soccer at Georgetown University. He won the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship with Georgetown in 2019 and was later named First Team All-BIG EAST in 2021.
NYCFC sold his Homegrown Priority rights to Columbus Crew for $50,000 in General Allocation Money in January 2022, and Sands signed his first professional contract with the Crew that month, making his debut later that year. He became part of a Columbus side that would go on to win the 2023 MLS Cup, though his own campaign was interrupted early: he tore the ACL in his left knee during a match against Charlotte FC on 22 April 2023. He did not return to competitive action until March 2024.
His spell in Columbus ended that summer. On 31 July 2024, the Crew traded him to New England Revolution in a deal that sent defender DeJuan Jones and up to $600,000 in General Allocation Money back to Columbus.
Sands has also represented the United States at youth level, with caps at both Under-17 and Under-15, and has been capped by the senior national team. Across his MLS career he has made 63 appearances, scoring once and adding six assists.
