Colombia U20 Women

These are the Colombians who go furthest before the senior side even calls their names. The under-20 team has never lifted the CONMEBOL title — Brazil has taken every edition — but Colombia reached the final in 2010 and again in 2022, and finished third in 2012, results that put them a rung below the continent's benchmark rather than chasing it from a distance. That standing carried over to the world stage: quarter-finals in 2010, where a 2–0 win over Sweden preceded a loss to Germany, and again in 2022, this time falling to Brazil after beating them once already that year, the group's first win over the Brazilians at this level. In 2024 the run stopped a stage earlier, in the last sixteen, against South Korea.

Barranquilla is home only in an administrative sense — the federation was born there in 1924, back when it was still the Liga de Football Atlántico, long before it became the Federación Colombiana de Fútbol — and the squad trains at the national centre near Bogotá, calling on the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez when a qualifier needs a fixed address. Yellow shirts, navy shorts, red socks: the flag, worn the way the senior team wears it, down to sharing its nickname, Las Cafeteras.

What the age group is best known for is producing players the senior team cannot do without. Linda Caicedo announced herself here, winning the Golden Boot and Silver Ball at the 2018 U-20 World Cup before she had turned professional for long, and by the time she was starting for the full national side, the pattern was already familiar: Yoreli Rincón and Leicy Santos had walked the same road.

Games against Brazil carry history now, not just hierarchy. Against Argentina, the tension needs no scoreline to explain it.
