When the Nigerian senator David Cobbina Brigidi bought the former Metropolitan Sporting Club on 1 October 2013 and renamed it after his own surname, the team took the field at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park in Aiyinase, in Ghana's Western Region. Brigidi died in 2018, and the club was taken over by businessman Haruna Iddrisu. Iddrisu moved Karela United first to the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale for the 2023–24 season, then in 2024 further north still, to the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex in Nalerigu.

Karela reached the Ghana Premier League for the first time by winning Zone II of the Division One League in the 2016–17 season.

Kotoko had it the other way round in the 2023–24 MTN FA Cup, when Karela knocked the giants out in the Round of 16 before Nsoatreman ended the run in the quarter-finals. Diawisie Taylor, the club's top scorer through its best Premier League seasons with 18 goals in 2020–21, still holds the record for the fastest goal in the competition's history.
