Umeå IK Dam sits in Elitettan these days, still working its way back from the level where its trophy case was built — the club last stood on the domestic summit in 2008, and the two promotion-winning campaigns since, in 2019 and 2021, have been about returning rather than repeating what came before.

What came before is the reason the name still carries weight in European football. Between 2000 and 2008, under coach Richard Holmlund, Umeå won seven Damallsvenskan titles, four Swedish Cups and two Svenska Supercupen, and reached three European finals, losing twice to Eintracht Frankfurt and once to Arsenal — but winning the UEFA Women's Cup itself in both 2003 and 2004. Marta played there through the peak of it, alongside Hanna Ljungberg and Malin Moström, both of whom built their careers in Umeå colours rather than passing through.

The team traces back to 9 September 1984, when Roland Arnqvist founded the women's section inside the wider Umeå IK sports association and took charge as its first coach; the side started out in the fourth division the following year. It stayed part of that multi-sport body until 2011, when the women's team broke away to run itself independently as Umeå IK FF.

Home games are played at Umeå Energi Arena, also known as Gammliavallen, which the club shares with the city's men's sides. Black and yellow remain the colours on the crest.
