Tai Po's first top-flight championship, in 2018–19, carried a weight beyond the trophy itself: no district team had won the league since Yuen Long in 1963. Wong Wai captained the side to that title. Six years later they added a second, in 2024–25, and this year they paired it with the Hong Kong FA Cup and the Senior Shield, both retained from 2025's run.

The cup breakthrough had come earlier, in 2008–09, when Tai Po became the first district club to win the FA Cup. Between the two league titles the club spent years being pulled apart and rebuilt: promoted to the top flight in 2006, they slid back down, climbed out of the Second Division in 2013–14, were relegated again the following season, and bounced straight back by winning the First Division in 2015–16. In 2020 financial trouble forced them to withdraw from the league altogether and drop down; they answered by winning the First Division again in 2021–22.

The club was founded in 2002 in Tai Po, and its sponsorship-driven names — Wofoo Tai Po, NT Realty Wofoo Tai Po, and stretches back to plain Wofoo Tai Po — gave way in 2023 to the simpler Tai Po F.C. The nickname The Greens comes from the green shirts and white shorts they've worn through most of that history. Chan Siu Kwan, named Hong Kong Footballer of the Year for 2023–24, has been part of the squad through the recent run of titles.

Home games are played at the Tai Po Sports Ground, which holds 3,200. Against North District FC, in the New Territories Derby, and against the older Hong Kong clubs like South China and Kitchee, Tai Po still carries the label of the district side that broke through.
